A both teams to score bet depends on four numbers, not two: how often each side scores and how often each side keeps a clean sheet. The GG and NG picks above come from that two-way check, and this page shows the method, the prices to expect and the slip mistakes that cost punters most.
How the GG and NG market settles
GG (goal goal, or BTTS yes) wins when each team scores at least once in 90 minutes plus stoppage time. NG (no goal, or BTTS no) wins when one or both teams fail to score, so 0–0, 3–0 and 0–2 are all NG. Own goals count for the team credited with them. For the full background, read our explainer on what GG and NG stand for.
The data behind each GG and NG pick
Most weak BTTS tips look only at attacks. A team that scores in every match is little use for GG if its opponent keeps clean sheets half the time. We check both directions for both teams, using home and away splits.
| Data point | Points to GG | Points to NG |
|---|---|---|
| Failed-to-score rate | Both under 20% | One side above 35% |
| Clean-sheet rate | Both under 25% | Favourite above 40% |
| xG against per game | Both above 1.2 | One side below 0.9 |
| Recent BTTS rate | 7+ of last 10 | 3 or fewer of last 10 |
We then layer on team news. A first-choice striker missing from the weaker side can cut its scoring chance sharply, while an injured goalkeeper or centre-back on either side pushes us towards GG.
Match profiles where GG lands and where it breaks
Profiles that suit GG
- Two mid-table sides with decent attacks and average defences, where neither can sit back for a point.
- A home favourite that presses high and leaves space behind against a visitor with a quick counter-attack.
- Late-season fixtures between teams with nothing to defend, where defensive organisation often slips.
Profiles that suit NG
- A dominant side with a strong clean-sheet record against a visitor that rarely creates chances.
- Cup second legs where the leading team protects an aggregate advantage.
- Leagues with strong home sides and low away scoring; the NPFL predictions page covers why away goals there are hard to come by.
Mismatches tempt punters into GG because they expect goals, but a 3–0 is NG. If you expect one team to run riot, our clean sheet and win-to-nil picks are the better fit.
How game state and timing shape a GG bet
The order of goals matters more in this market than in most. When the favourite scores first, the underdog has to come forward, which often creates the second goal at the other end. When the underdog scores first, a strong side usually equalises, but a team that defends deep can also hold a 1–0 for an hour.
So we check when each team tends to score and concede. A side that concedes many goals after the 70th minute is useful for GG, because late pressure from a trailing opponent often brings the goal you need. A side that scores almost all its goals in the first half and then sits back is a warning sign. We also look at substitutes: a weaker team with a quick forward on the bench has a realistic late route to goal.
Half-time is a useful checkpoint. At 0–0 at the break, GG prices drift because there is less time for two goals; if the first half was open, with chances at both ends, that drift can make a live GG bet better value than the pre-match price.
Typical BTTS odds and what they imply
GG prices usually run from about 1.50 to 2.10, and NG from about 1.70 to 2.40, depending on the fixture. At 1.80 the bookmaker implies roughly a 55.6% chance; we only post a GG pick when our own estimate is clearly higher than that. A GG price below 1.55 often means the market already expects goals at both ends, leaving little value.
Example You stake ₦2,500 on GG at 1.72. If both teams score, you receive ₦4,300, which is ₦1,800 profit. The same stake on NG at 2.05 would return ₦5,125 if one side failed to score.
GG and over 2.5: when the combination is worth it
The GG and over 2.5 combo needs both teams to score and three or more goals in total. Because GG already rules out 1–0, 2–0 and 0–0, the only GG result it loses on is 1–1, and that is the most common draw in football. Prices typically sit between 2.00 and 2.60.
Example GG alone is 1.70 and GG plus over 2.5 is 2.25. With ₦2,000, GG alone pays ₦3,400 while the combo pays ₦4,500. The extra ₦1,100 is your reward for taking the 1–1 risk. We only suggest the combo when two attacks project well above one goal each, so 1–1 is unlikely to be the natural result. Our over 2.5 goals picks use the same total-goals model.
Common BTTS mistakes
- Backing GG because last season’s meeting finished 2–2, without checking current squads.
- Ignoring whether the weaker team even creates chances away from home.
- Cashing out early in panic: a GG bet at 1–0 after 70 minutes still has a fair chance, and our live betting guide explains how cash-out offers are priced.
- Loading eight GG picks into one slip because each “looks likely”.
BTTS in slips, rollovers and the results table above
GG works best as a single or in short doubles. Two GG picks at 1.75 make about 3.06, but if each has a 58% chance, both land only around one time in three. If you build longer slips, add each price into the accumulator calculator first so you see the true combined odds.
In the picks above, the pick column shows GG, NG or GG & Over 2.5, and the one-line reason names the main data point behind it. The results table records the final score for every pick, so you can see exactly which GG bets lost to a 1–0 or a 2–0. Frequently asked questions
Yes. A 1–1 draw is a winning GG bet because each team scored once. It is, however, the one GG scoreline that loses a GG and over 2.5 combination, since the total is only two goals. Check which version you placed before checking the result.
That depends on your own estimate of the chance. If you rate GG at 60%, fair odds are about 1.67, so anything above roughly 1.75 offers value. We avoid most GG prices under 1.55 because the bookmaker has usually priced in the goals already. See how to read odds.
Often, yes. When a strong side faces a team that rarely scores away from home, wins like 2–0 or 3–0 are common and they all settle as NG. The risk is a late consolation goal, so we check whether the favourite tends to ease off once the game is won.
Many bookmakers offer a result plus GG option, such as home win and both teams to score. It pays more than either part alone because both must happen. It suits a favourite with a leaky defence, where results like 2–1 or 3–1 are realistic.
No. Penalty shootouts and extra time are not part of the GG market in standard settlement. Only goals scored during 90 minutes plus stoppage time count, including penalties awarded during normal play.
