A handful of Nigerian bookmakers let you pay with airtime, but most punters get a better deal from a mobile wallet or a bank USSD code. This page explains how each method works, what it typically costs and why your winnings come back to a bank or wallet account, never to your phone credit. The list above is filtered to sites that take at least one of these methods.

How an airtime deposit reaches your betting account

There are two routes. In direct carrier billing, you choose an airtime option in the bookmaker’s cashier or payment gateway, enter your MTN, Airtel or Glo number and approve a prompt on your phone; the amount is taken from your airtime balance. The second route is indirect: you convert airtime to cash through a third-party app, then fund your account from the wallet that receives it.

Both cost more than a bank transfer. Carrier and gateway charges on airtime deposits are often reported in the 10–20% range, and airtime converters typically pay out around 80–85% of face value. Caps per transaction are also lower, often a few thousand Naira.

Example You top up ₦2,000 of airtime and the route charges 15%. Your betting balance receives ₦1,700. Staking that at odds of 2.00 and winning returns ₦3,400, only ₦1,400 more than the ₦2,000 you spent. The same ₦2,000 by wallet transfer would have returned ₦4,000.

Airtime, OPay, PalmPay, Moniepoint, USSD or bank transfer?

Method Typical cost Withdraw to it?
Airtime Highest; percentage fee No
OPay / PalmPay / Moniepoint Usually free or small Often, via account number
Bank USSD Small session charge To the linked bank account
Bank transfer Usually free or small Yes
Card Varies by gateway Rarely; bank account instead

OPay, PalmPay and Moniepoint accounts come with ten-digit account numbers, so a bookmaker that pays to Nigerian bank accounts can usually pay to them as well. That makes a wallet the most practical all-round option: quick to fund, quick to receive, and cheap.

Funding a betting account with OPay or PalmPay

  1. Open the bookmaker’s deposit page. Pick bank transfer, a named wallet, or the payment gateway option and enter the amount.
  2. Get the payment details. Many sites show a one-time virtual account number; transfer the exact amount from your wallet before it expires.
  3. Or use the wallet’s betting section. Some wallet apps let you choose the bookmaker, enter your betting user ID and pay without leaving the app.
  4. Check the user ID twice. A wrong ID can credit someone else’s account, and reversals are slow.
  5. Keep the receipt. If the balance has not updated after a few minutes, send the transaction reference to the bookmaker’s support.

USSD deposits for basic phones and weak data

Bank USSD codes let you fund a betting account with no data at all: dial your bank’s code, choose pay or transfer, enter the bookmaker’s payment details or code and authorise with your PIN. Your network charges a small fee per USSD session, and banks may set lower daily limits on USSD than on their apps. Never dial a USSD string someone sends you on WhatsApp; type your bank’s own code.

Checking whether a bookmaker takes airtime

Airtime support changes as bookmakers switch payment gateways, so a list copied from elsewhere may be out of date. The list above is filtered on the payment methods each bookmaker publishes. Before registering anywhere, confirm it yourself in three steps: open the bookmaker’s payment methods or help page, which most sites show without logging in; look for your network by name (MTN, Airtel or Glo) and the stated minimum and maximum; then ask live chat whether the option is currently working, since gateways sometimes pause airtime for maintenance.

If the answer is no, a wallet is the next easiest route. Opening an OPay, PalmPay or Moniepoint account takes a phone number and your BVN or NIN, and you can fund it at a bank, through an agent or by transfer. Moving ₦1,000 from a wallet to a bookmaker normally costs little or nothing, compared with the ₦100 to ₦200 a 10–20% airtime charge would take from the same amount.

Fees and limits to check before you choose a method

For each method, look in the cashier for the minimum deposit, the maximum per transaction and per day, and whether the bookmaker or the gateway adds a charge. Our ranking rewards low minimums: a ₦100 minimum deposit earns a full point in the Naira payments score, OPay or PalmPay support adds another, and USSD adds half a point, as the scoring method explains. A good site lets you see all of this before you register.

Some welcome offers exclude certain deposit methods. If you plan to claim one, check the promotion terms for excluded payment types; the bonus guide lists the other terms to read. If you want something without depositing at all, see free bets you can get before your first deposit.

Withdrawals: why winnings never come back as airtime

Bookmakers pay winnings to a bank or wallet account in your verified name, not to your SIM. So even if you deposit by airtime, add a bank or wallet account that matches the name on your betting profile before you need a payout. A name mismatch is the most common reason a first withdrawal is held. The main bookmaker comparison shows each site’s published payout time.

Telecom and USSD channels must be licensed too

In October 2026 the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority told telecom operators and value-added service providers that gaming offered to Lagos customers through USSD, SMS, short codes or carrier billing needs its licence, and that unlicensed services must be suspended. A betting service sold through your network is not automatically legal.

Phone-credit payments take seconds, which makes it easy to keep topping up. Set a deposit limit in your account, and if you need help stepping back, our responsible gambling page lists self-exclusion options. If you would rather avoid local payment rails entirely, the crypto deposit guide covers that route and its risks.

Frequently asked questions

Where a bookmaker supports airtime, MTN and Airtel are the most commonly accepted, with Glo supported on some sites. Support varies by bookmaker and payment gateway, so check the network list in the cashier before you start. Expect a percentage charge and a low per-transaction cap.
