- New betting sites in Nigeria: what to check first
The best betting sites in Nigeria hold a state licence you can check, pay out to your Naira bank account within a published time, and print their bonus rules in plain numbers. The ranked list and comparison table above do the sorting; this guide shows you how to check each of those things yourself before you deposit a single Naira.
In short
- Since the Supreme Court judgment of 22 November 2024, licensing sits with the states (the FCT stays federal), so look for a state regulator on the site.
- Expect to verify your identity with an ID such as your NIN slip, and to withdraw only to a bank account in your own name.
- Compare published withdrawal times and minimums, not the size of the welcome offer.
- Our scores weigh six criteria; licence and safety carry the most weight at 25%.
Five checks before you choose a bookmaker
Most bad experiences with a bookmaker trace back to one skipped check: an unlicensed operator, a payout rule nobody read, or a bonus that locked the deposit. Run these five in order and you will rule out most problem sites in ten minutes.
- Licence. Find the regulator and licence details in the site footer or terms, then confirm them with the regulator (method below).
- Verification rules. Read when the site asks for ID: at sign-up or only at your first withdrawal. The second can mean a surprise delay on your first win.
- Naira payments. Check the minimum deposit, the minimum withdrawal and the stated payout time for the method you actually use.
- Markets and app. Make sure the leagues and bet types you play are covered, and that the app runs on your phone.
- Bonus terms. If you plan to claim an offer, find the wagering, minimum odds and expiry before you opt in.
State licensing since the Supreme Court judgment of 22 November 2024
On 22 November 2024 the Supreme Court nullified the National Lottery Act 2005 in a suit Lagos and other states filed in 2008. The court held that lotteries and gaming in the states are for state Houses of Assembly to regulate, while the National Assembly keeps that power only for the Federal Capital Territory. The practical result: an operator serving punters in Lagos needs a licence from the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA), and a federal licence alone no longer covers the states.
How online betting that crosses state borders should be licensed is still being argued between states and the federal government, so you will see bookmakers listing more than one licence. Our explainer on whether betting is legal in Nigeria follows the legal position in more depth.
How to check a bookmaker’s licence
Copy the operating company’s name from the bookmaker’s terms, not just the brand name, because licences are issued to companies. The LSLGA publishes a register of licensed operators grouped by licence category, with each company’s name and expiry date. If the expiry date has passed, the operator is not authorised until it renews. A site that shows only an offshore licence, or no regulator at all, gives you far less protection if a withdrawal is refused.
Verification (KYC): NIN, ID and the bank-name rule
Licensed bookmakers must confirm who you are and that you are 18 or older. Typically that means your full legal name, date of birth and phone number at registration, then a government ID such as your NIN slip, international passport, voter’s card or driver’s licence. Some sites check your NIN during sign-up; others wait until you request your first withdrawal. Larger withdrawals or unusual payment patterns can trigger a fresh check later.
The rule that catches most new punters is the name match: withdrawals go to a bank account whose name matches your verified account name. Register with exactly the name on your bank account and ID, upload clear photos, and allow roughly one to three days for document review. Treat any site that asks for your bank PIN, card PIN or a one-time password as a scam, because no bookmaker needs them.
Naira deposits and withdrawal times
Bank transfer, card, USSD and wallets such as OPay and PalmPay are the standard funding routes. Airtime top-ups exist on some sites but tend to cost more and have lower caps; the guide to betting sites that take airtime, OPay and PalmPay compares them. If you would rather fund in USDT or Bitcoin, see our separate page on crypto bookmakers.
For withdrawals, the published time matters more than the advertised speed of deposits. Look for a stated window (minutes, same day, within 24 hours), the minimum withdrawal amount, and whether the first withdrawal goes through a manual security review. A site that publishes none of these leaves you guessing, and our method scores that lower.
Example You win ₦6,500 on a site with a ₦1,000 minimum withdrawal and a ₦100 minimum deposit. You can take ₦6,000 out and keep ₦500 to play. On a site with a ₦10,000 minimum withdrawal, the same ₦6,500 stays locked until you win more, which quietly pushes you to keep staking.
Markets and features: live betting, cash out, Aviator and virtuals
Every major bookmaker covers the Premier League, but depth differs fast once you go further: NPFL fixtures, corners and cards markets, player shots, or a decent range of goal lines. Open the match page for a mid-table fixture in a league you follow and count the markets; that shows the real depth better than the homepage.
In-play markets and partial cash out let you act on what happens during a match; our page on betting while matches are in play explains how to use both without overpaying. Many sites also carry the Aviator crash game and round-the-clock virtual football, which run on different rules from sports bets. If those matter to you, compare sites that offer Aviator and read how virtual football works before staking.
Apps, bonus terms and customer support
An app should load the betslip quickly on 4G, keep you logged in safely and let you deposit, withdraw and set limits without opening a browser. Some operators list their Android app on the Play Store, others offer a direct download from their own website; our betting app comparison covers safe installation and data use.
Judge a welcome offer by its rules, not its headline: the wagering multiple, minimum odds per selection, expiry in days and any cap on winnings. The bonus guide works the maths through in Naira so you can see what an offer is worth after wagering.
Look at how the app or site shows your bet history too: you should be able to see every settled bet, its odds and the time it was placed, which you will need if you ever dispute a settlement.
Test customer support before you need it. Send a simple question by live chat (for example, the minimum withdrawal to OPay) and note how long the reply takes and whether it answers the question. Check that the site lists more than one channel, such as chat plus email or a phone line, and a written complaints process.
Red flags that should stop you depositing
Walk away from any bookmaker that shows no regulator or licence holder, asks you to pay a fee to release winnings, sells “inside information” on rigged games, pays withdrawals to agents’ personal accounts, or changes its bonus terms after you have opted in.
Two quieter warning signs: terms that let the operator void winning bets for vague reasons such as “irregular play”, and no visible responsible-gambling tools. Licensed operators typically offer deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion in the account settings, and our responsible gambling page explains how to use them.
How our top 10, top 20 and top 50 ranking works
Every bookmaker in the list is scored out of 10 on six weighted criteria, using the licence and terms each operator publishes plus independent Nigerian review sources. Each review lists its sources and the date they were checked. Affiliate commissions do not decide the order; the formula does. The full scoring rules are on our how we rate page.
| Criterion | Weight | What scores well |
|---|---|---|
| Licence and safety | 25% | Confirmed state licence |
| Naira payments | 20% | Many methods, OPay/PalmPay, low minimum |
| Withdrawals | 15% | Published, fast payout time |
| Markets and features | 15% | Live, cash out, virtuals, Aviator |
| App and mobile | 15% | Android and iOS apps |
| Bonus terms | 10% | Published wagering, odds, expiry |
Example A bookmaker scores 8.8 for a confirmed state licence, 8.0 on payments, 8.5 for a same-day payout, 10 on features, 9.5 for two apps and 8.0 on bonus terms. Weighted: 2.2 + 1.6 + 1.275 + 1.5 + 1.425 + 0.8 = 8.8 out of 10.
The first ten rows are the strongest all-rounders, rows 11 to 20 usually trail on one criterion such as a missing iOS app or an unpublished payout time, and the full top 50 includes offshore-licensed sites that score lower on safety. Use the filters above when one feature matters more to you than the overall score.
New betting sites in Nigeria: what to check first
New operators often compete with bigger welcome offers, boosted odds or lower minimum deposits. The trade-off is less history: fewer independent reports on how they handle withdrawals and disputes. Before joining one, confirm the licence holder on the regulator’s register, make a small deposit, and request a small withdrawal early so you learn the payout process before your balance grows. You can read each operator’s full write-up in our bookmaker reviews.
Frequently asked questions
The number changes as licences are issued, renewed or lapse, so no fixed figure stays accurate for long. The Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority publishes its register of licensed operators by category with expiry dates. Check the company name from a bookmaker's terms against that register instead of relying on a count.
Yes. Having accounts with different bookmakers is normal, and each verifies you separately with the same ID. What is not allowed is opening more than one account with the same bookmaker, which usually leads to closed accounts and voided winnings. Our bonus guide explains why multi-accounting for offers backfires.
Many bookmakers run a one-off security review on the first payout: they confirm your documents and check that the receiving bank account name matches your profile. Once that is cleared, later withdrawals usually follow the normal published time. Upload ID early to avoid the wait.
They can operate legitimately under an offshore licence, but a Nigerian regulator cannot help you if a dispute arises, and payments may run through intermediaries. Our scoring gives offshore-only licences 5.0 for safety versus 8.8 for a confirmed state licence, which is why they rank lower.
It is one ranking. The top 10 are the ten highest overall scores, and the top 50 is the complete list of bookmakers we track for Nigerian punters, sorted by the same weighted formula. Lower positions usually lose points on licence, payout transparency or app availability.
