On this page
Our Ligue 1 prediction for each fixture we cover appears in the picks above, with the kick-off in WAT and the reason behind it. French football has changed more than its reputation suggests: the league shrank to 18 clubs from 2023/24 and its scoring rate has climbed sharply since the mid-2000s.
In short
- 18 clubs and 34 matches each since 2023/24, down from 20 clubs and 38 matches.
- Goals per game rose from 2.13 in 2005/06 to 2.96 in 2024/25, according to Sportradar.
- France uses the same clock as Germany: one hour ahead of Lagos from late March to late October, level with Lagos in winter.
- The bottom two go down; 16th faces a Ligue 2 club in a two-legged play-off.
Ligue 1 format: 18 clubs and a play-off for 16th
Each club plays the other 17 home and away, for 34 rounds and 306 matches from August to May, with a short winter break around Christmas. The 2022/23 season was the restructuring year, when four clubs went down and only two came up to cut the league from 20 to 18.
At the bottom, 17th and 18th are relegated automatically. The club in 16th meets the winner of the Ligue 2 play-off semi-final over two legs, with the first leg at the Ligue 2 ground and the return in the Ligue 1 stadium. With four fewer rounds, each result carries more weight, so relegation and European-place pressure builds earlier than it did in a 38-round season.
Ligue 1 kick-off times in WAT
Ligue 1 spreads each round from Friday night to Sunday night for television, and the headline Sunday match usually kicks off at 20:45 in France. France and Nigeria share UTC+1 in winter, so from the last Sunday of October to the last Sunday of March that game starts at 20:45 WAT. During French summer time it starts at 19:45 WAT.
The picks above already show every kick-off in WAT, so you do not need to convert. The one thing to watch is the clock change weekend in late March, when evening matches suddenly start an hour earlier for punters in Nigeria.
What makes a Ligue 1 prediction different
The low-scoring label is out of date
Over the 20 seasons from 2005/06, Sportradar puts Ligue 1 at 2.53 goals per game, the lowest of the big five. But that average hides a steep rise: 2.13 at the start of the period and 2.96 in 2024/25, close to the Bundesliga. If you still default to unders in French games because of what the league used to be, you are betting on old information. Judge each match on the two teams’ recent chance creation instead.
Short favourites and one-sided title races
French title races have often been decided early, with one well-funded club far ahead of the rest. That produces many matches where the favourite is priced at 1.20 or below. Those prices look safe in an acca but carry little reward for the risk, and a single draw sinks the slip.
Example Three Ligue 1 favourites at 1.25 each combine to 1.95. A ₦1,000 stake returns ₦1,953 if all three win. But if each has an 80% chance, the chance that all three come in is only about 51%. One draw and the ₦1,000 is gone, which is why we often prefer a handicap or a goals line on the same match.
The chasing pack is where prices are fairer
Matches between clubs from third to tenth are usually the most evenly priced in France. Those are the games where draw no bet, double chance and both-teams-to-score lines tend to offer the most balanced risk, and where our own probability is most likely to differ from the bookmaker’s.
Markets that suit Ligue 1 betting tips
- Handicap on the big favourite. Instead of a 1.18 home win, a -1 or -1.5 line can price the gap more honestly. See our European handicap picks.
- Draw no bet in mid-table games. Your stake comes back if it ends level. Daily selections sit on the draw no bet picks page.
- Both teams to score. Rising goal numbers make GG more relevant than it used to be; read what GG/NG means if you are new to it.
- Under 2.5 with a reason. Still useful when two defensive sides meet, but it needs evidence from this season, not the league’s old image.
Reading Ligue 1 odds and spotting value
Work out the implied probability first: 1 divided by the price. A 1.25 favourite implies 80%; a 3.40 draw implies about 29%. If our numbers give the draw 33%, that 3.40 is the value bet, even though the favourite is far more likely to win. The accumulator calculator shows how quickly short prices multiply and how fast the combined probability falls.
Ligue 1 odds can also move on Thursday night results in European competition, because French clubs who played away in Europe often rotate for their weekend league game.
What goes into each French pick
- Rest days. A Sunday 20:45 game after a Thursday European tie is a common rotation point.
- Recent chance creation. Expected goals for and against over the last eight to ten matches, home and away separately.
- Table context. With only 34 rounds, the gap to 16th and to the European places changes quickly.
- Coupe de France rounds. Clubs still in the cup may rest players either side of a tie.
- Our price against theirs. A pick goes up only when our probability beats the bookmaker’s.
Using the tabs and results table
The top picks list shows our strongest French selections first, with confidence from 1 to 5. Use the Weekend tab for the full round and the market filter to separate goals picks from result picks. The results table above shows every French pick from the last 30 days, settled as won, lost or void, so you can see how a market has performed before you follow it.

Frequently asked questions
Eighteen. The league was reduced from 20 clubs after the 2022/23 season, when four teams were relegated and two promoted. Each club now plays 34 matches, so there are 306 games in a season instead of 380.
The main Sunday evening match usually kicks off at 20:45 in France. That is 20:45 WAT from late October to late March and 19:45 WAT during French summer time. Each pick on this page already shows the kick-off in Nigerian time.
Less than it was. Its 20-season average of 2.53 goals per game is the lowest of the five biggest European leagues, but the 2024/25 figure was 2.96. Treat each French match on its own evidence instead of assuming unders, and check recent expected-goals numbers for both teams.
The club that finishes 16th. It plays the winner of the Ligue 2 play-off semi-final over two legs, away first and at home second. The 17th and 18th placed clubs are relegated without a play-off.
Prices like 1.25 look safe, but each one still loses roughly one time in five. Three of them together win only about half the time while paying under double your stake. A handicap line or a goals market on the same match often gives a fairer return for the risk.
