Our AFCON prediction for each Africa Cup of Nations match and qualifier we cover appears in the picks above, with the odds, a confidence score and the kick-off in WAT. Tournament football needs different rules from league betting: two in three teams survive the group stage, knockout games can go to extra time and penalties, and many markets settle on 90 minutes only.

In short

  • 24 teams in six groups of four; the top two and the four best third-placed teams reach the round of 16.
  • The 2027 finals run from 19 June to 17 July in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, the first three-nation hosts.
  • East Africa is two hours ahead of Nigeria: 20:00 local time is 18:00 WAT.
  • Match bets settle on 90 minutes; “to qualify” and outright markets include extra time and penalties.

How the Africa Cup of Nations works

Twenty-four nations are drawn into six groups of four, and each team plays three group games. The top two in every group go through, joined by the four best third-placed teams, ranked on points, then goal difference, then goals scored. That makes 16 teams for a single-match knockout bracket: round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, a third-place match and the final.

If a knockout game is level after 90 minutes, two 15-minute periods of extra time follow, then penalties.

AFCON 2027 and the qualifiers

The next finals are co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from 19 June to 17 July 2027. Named host cities include Nairobi, Kampala, Hoima, Lira, Dar es Salaam, Arusha and Zanzibar.

Qualifying uses 48 teams in 12 groups of four, home and away, with the top two in each group going through. The three hosts qualify automatically; in groups that contain a host, only the best-placed non-host advances. Matchdays 3 and 4 are scheduled for 9 to 17 November 2026, and matchdays 5 and 6 for 22 to 30 March 2027.

Kick-off times and conditions for Nigerian punters

Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda all use East Africa Time (UTC+3), two hours ahead of WAT, so subtract two hours from any local kick-off. Venues also differ more than at most tournaments: Nairobi sits close to 1,800 metres above sea level and Kampala at over 1,100 metres, while Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar are on the coast. Altitude can affect teams not used to it, especially in the second half, so we note where each group is played.

Group-stage AFCON betting tips: why caution pays

Because 16 of 24 teams advance, a single draw rarely ends a tournament. The stronger teams can afford a careful opener, and in the third round of games a draw can be enough for both sides. Any matchday 3 pick starts with the group table, because one side’s needs often decide how open the game will be.

  • Openers. First games are often tight while teams avoid an early defeat; under 2.5 goals deserves a look before you back the favourite.
  • Matchday 3. If a point is enough for both teams, the draw market may be better value than either win.
  • Double chance on the underdog. Gaps between nations are smaller at the finals than in qualifying, so double chance on a well-drilled outsider can be a fair price.

Knockout rounds: how extra time and penalties affect your slip

This is where most AFCON bets go wrong. Standard markets settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time, so a team that wins on penalties did not win in your 1X2 bet: the result was a draw.

Example A round-of-16 tie is 1-1 after 90 minutes and your team wins on penalties. ₦2,000 on them to win at 2.40 loses, because the match result was a draw. ₦2,000 on them “to qualify” at 1.65 returns ₦3,300, a ₦1,300 profit. The draw at 3.10 would have returned ₦6,200.

Before you add a knockout game to a slip, check whether the market says “90 minutes”, “to qualify” or “to lift the trophy”. Extra-time goals count for none of the 90-minute goals markets.

AFCON odds for outrights: winner, group and top scorer

Outright markets settle at the end of the tournament and include extra time and penalties. Winner prices shorten and lengthen after every round, so compare the price you can get now with what the same team may cost after a good group stage. Group winner markets ignore third-place qualification entirely: only first place pays. Top scorer markets usually apply dead-heat rules when players finish level, which cuts your return. The guide to reading odds shows how to turn an outright price into a probability.

Super Eagles prediction: betting on Nigeria without bias

Nigeria have won the Africa Cup of Nations three times, in 1980, 1994 and 2013. When the Super Eagles play, our picks follow the same method as any other match, and you should too. Write down your own chance for the result before you look at the odds; if you only like the bet because it is Nigeria, the price is not the reason. For qualifiers, home and away matter as much as in club football, and long trips can affect both teams.

How we make each AFCON prediction and how to use this page

For every Africa Cup of Nations prediction we look at the group table and what each side needs, rest days between games, travel and venue altitude, expected goals from recent internationals, and squad news once teams are named. Picks go up only when our probability beats the bookmaker’s. Use the Today and Tomorrow tabs during the finals, when games are played almost every day, and the results table above to see how our tournament picks have settled. Between tournaments, the NPFL predictions cover the domestic game and the predictions hub covers every league.
