What Does Handicap Mean in Betting?
The meaning of handicap in betting: a virtual goal start or deficit added before kick-off. Learn European and Asian handicaps, -1 and +1 lines, half and quarter lines, with ₦ settlement tables.
A handicap in betting is a virtual goal advantage or deficit given to a team before kick-off, which is added to the final score to settle the bet. Backing a team at -1 means it must win by two or more goals to be paid in full, while +1 means a draw still wins. It evens up lopsided matches.
On this page
In handicap betting the bookmaker gives one team a virtual head start or deficit in goals, and that handicap is added to the real final score to decide your bet. It turns a one-sided match into a closer contest, so backing the favourite pays more and backing the underdog becomes safer. Try the calculator below with any score and line, then read on for the rules.
The virtual head start
Suppose a strong home side is 1.30 to win. Backing them at -1 means you take one goal away from their final tally. A 2–0 win becomes 1–0 after the handicap, so you still win; a 1–0 win becomes 1–1. The odds rise to something like 2.10 because the task is harder. A +1 line works the other way, adding a goal to the underdog.
The handicap only applies to the regular-time score of 90 minutes plus stoppage time. There are two main families of handicap, and they settle differently.
European (3-way) handicap
European handicap uses whole-goal lines and keeps three outcomes, just like the 1X2 result market: home, handicap draw and away. There is no refund in any result.
| Real result | Margin after -1 | Winning pick |
|---|---|---|
| Home wins 3–0 | Home +2 | Home (-1) |
| Home wins 2–1 | Level | Handicap draw |
| Draw 1–1 | Away +1 | Away (+1) |
| Away wins 0–1 | Away +2 | Away (+1) |
Example ₦2,000 on Home (-1) at 2.40. A 3–0 home win returns ₦4,800 (₦2,800 profit). A 2–1 home win is a handicap draw, so the bet loses. Our 3-way handicap picks page uses these lines daily.
Asian handicap: two outcomes and possible refunds
Asian handicap removes the draw, so there are only two sides to back. Lines can be whole numbers (0, -1, +1), halves (-0.5, -1.5) or quarters (-0.25, -0.75). Whole lines refund your stake when the adjusted score is level; half lines can never be level, so they always win or lose.
| Home result | -0.5 | -1 | -1.5 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Win by 2+ | Win | Win | Win |
| Win by 1 | Win | Refund | Lose |
| Draw | Lose | Lose | Lose |
| Lose | Lose | Lose | Lose |
Two lines are worth remembering. Asian handicap 0 settles exactly like draw no bet, and a team at +0.5 wins on a win or a draw, the same as the matching 1X or X2 double chance pick.
-1 and +1 handicaps on European and Asian lines
The same number can settle differently depending on the family, and this is where most confusion comes from.
| Line | European | Asian |
|---|---|---|
| -1, team wins by 1 | Loses (handicap draw) | Stake refunded |
| -1, team wins by 2+ | Wins | Wins |
| +1, team draws | Wins | Wins |
| +1, team loses by 1 | Loses (handicap draw) | Stake refunded |
| +1, team loses by 2+ | Loses | Loses |
So +1 handicap means your team can draw and still win the bet, and -1 means a one-goal win is not enough to be paid in full on either version.
Quarter lines: how -0.25, -0.75 and +0.25 settle
A quarter line splits your stake into two equal bets on the neighbouring lines. -0.75 is half on -0.5 and half on -1; -0.25 is half on 0 and half on -0.5; +0.25 is half on 0 and half on +0.5.
| Your team | -0.25 | -0.75 | +0.25 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wins by 2+ | ₦3,800 | ₦3,800 | ₦3,800 |
| Wins by 1 | ₦3,800 | ₦2,900 | ₦3,800 |
| Draws | ₦1,000 | ₦0 | ₦2,900 |
| Loses by 1 | ₦0 | ₦0 | ₦0 |
Take -0.75 with a one-goal win: the -0.5 half wins ₦1,000 × 1.90 = ₦1,900 and the -1 half is refunded ₦1,000, so you get back ₦2,900, a ₦900 profit. With +0.25 on a draw, the +0.5 half returns ₦1,900 and the 0 half refunds ₦1,000. The figures above are total returns, stake included.
The bigger the gap between two teams, the bigger the handicap line the bookmaker sets. Lines such as -1.5 or -2 are usually reserved for matches where the favourite is very short on the plain win.
How to choose a handicap line
Start with how many goals you expect the favourite to win by, not just whether they win. If you think a two-goal win is likely but a one-goal win is also possible, -1 on the Asian market gives a refund in the narrow case. If you are confident of a big margin, -1.5 pays more but has no safety net. For an underdog you expect to keep it close, +0.5 or +1 trades odds for cover. Compare a few lines on the same match, because the bookmaker’s margin can differ from line to line.
Common handicap mistakes
- Mixing up the sign. The minus team is giving goals away; the plus team is receiving them.
- Reading the European X as a real draw. On a home -1 line, X means a handicap draw, which is a one-goal home win.
- Live Asian lines. On many sites, in-play Asian handicap counts only goals scored after you place the bet, so a 1–0 lead at the time does not count. Check the market rules first; our in-play guide covers live prices.
- Assuming a refund on half lines. -1.5 or +0.5 never refund; only whole and quarter lines can.

Handicap meaning: FAQ
Your team starts the match one goal behind. On a European line it must win by two or more goals for you to win; a one-goal win is a handicap draw. On an Asian -1 line, a one-goal win refunds your stake and a two-goal win pays out in full.
The underdog starts with a one-goal lead. If it wins or draws, a +1 bet wins. If it loses by exactly one goal, an Asian +1 refunds your stake while a European +1 loses to the handicap draw. A defeat by two or more loses on both.
Only one line is: Asian handicap 0 settles exactly like draw no bet, with a refund on a draw. Every other line adds or removes goals before settlement, so it behaves differently from DNB.
Asian lines are usually easier to live with because whole and quarter lines can return part or all of your stake, and there are only two sides to choose. European lines are simpler to read but carry a third result, the handicap draw, which catches many new punters out.
A -0.75 bet is split in half across -0.5 and -1. If your team won by exactly one goal, the -0.5 half won and the -1 half was refunded, so you received the winning half plus your refunded half, not the full winning amount.
