How We Rate Betting Sites

Every bookmaker we list is scored out of 10 with one fixed formula, built from six criteria that matter to Nigerian punters: licence, Naira payments, withdrawals, markets, app and bonus terms. The inputs come from what each operator publishes, checked against its regulator and independent Nigerian sources. Because the formula is public, you can recalculate any score yourself.

In short

  • Six criteria, each scored out of 10, then weighted: licence 25%, Naira payments 20%, withdrawals, markets and app 15% each, bonus terms 10%.
  • Scores rate published facts, not luck, odds on a given day or customer service we cannot measure.
  • Each review lists its sources and the date we last checked them.
  • Affiliate commission plays no part in the calculation.

The scoring formula

The table below is the formula used on every review and on our bookmaker rankings. Each criterion produces a score out of 10; the overall score is the weighted average of the six.

Criterion Weight How it is scored
Licence & safety 25% Nigerian state licence with regulator details confirmed 8.8, Nigerian licence stated without full details 8.0, offshore licence 5.0, no licence found 3.0. Up to +0.7 for 5–10+ years operating and +0.3 for a named operating company. −1.0 when key facts come from a single source.
Naira payments 20% 5 + 0.5 per payment method (max 6), +1 for OPay or PalmPay, +0.5 for USSD, +1 for a ₦100 minimum deposit (+0.5 up to ₦500).
Withdrawals 15% Published withdrawal time: instant or minutes 9.0, a few hours or same day 8.5, within 24 hours 7.5, longer 6.5, not published 5.0. +0.3 when the minimum withdrawal is published.
Markets & features 15% 6 + 1 each for live betting, cash out, virtual football and Aviator.
App & mobile 15% Android and iOS apps 9.5, one platform 8.0, app of unconfirmed platform 7.5, mobile site only 6.0.
Bonus terms 10% No standard welcome offer 5.0; an offer 7.0, +1 when wagering is published, +0.5 each for published expiry and minimum odds, +0.5 for a no-deposit offer.

What each criterion measures and why it carries its weight

Licence and safety (25%)

This carries the most weight because it decides whether anyone can hold the bookmaker to account. Since the Supreme Court judgment of November 2024, betting is licensed by state regulators, so a licence we can confirm with the regulator scores highest. An offshore licence scores 5.0 because a Nigerian punter has no local body to complain to. We deduct a full point when key facts rest on a single source. Our guide to betting law and licence checks in Nigeria explains the background.

Naira payments (20%)

We count the deposit methods a bookmaker lists for Nigeria, then add points for OPay or PalmPay, USSD and a low minimum deposit. A ₦100 minimum earns a full point because it lets a careful punter test a site with very little at risk.

Withdrawals (15%)

We score the withdrawal time the bookmaker publishes, not anecdotes. A site that publishes no timeframe at all scores 5.0, because silence is itself a warning sign. Publishing the minimum withdrawal adds 0.3.

Markets and features (15%)

Every site starts at 6, then gains a point each for live betting, cash out, virtual football and Aviator. We do not try to count every market, since most licensed sites cover the main football lines.

App and mobile (15%)

Most Nigerians bet on a phone, so native apps for both Android and iOS score 9.5. A site that works only in the mobile browser scores 6.0.

Bonus terms (10%)

This has the lowest weight on purpose: a big headline offer is worth little if the rules are hidden. Points go to transparency, meaning published wagering, expiry and minimum odds, rather than to the size of the bonus.

A worked example of an overall score

Example A bookmaker holds a confirmed state licence and names its operating company (8.8 + 0.3 = 9.1). It lists four payment methods including OPay and USSD, with a ₦500 minimum deposit (5 + 2 + 1 + 0.5 + 0.5 = 9.0). It publishes same-day withdrawals and a minimum withdrawal (8.5 + 0.3 = 8.8). It offers live betting, cash out and virtual football but no Aviator (9.0). It has an Android app only (8.0) and a welcome offer with published wagering and expiry (7.0 + 1 + 0.5 = 8.5).

Weighted: 9.1 × 0.25 + 9.0 × 0.20 + 8.8 × 0.15 + 9.0 × 0.15 + 8.0 × 0.15 + 8.5 × 0.10 = 2.275 + 1.8 + 1.32 + 1.35 + 1.2 + 0.85 = 8.795, which shows as about 8.8 out of 10.

Where our information comes from

  • The bookmaker’s own terms and conditions, payment pages, bonus rules and licence statement.
  • The regulator’s published information, such as a state authority’s list of licensed operators.
  • The Google Play and Apple App Store listings, to confirm which apps exist.
  • Independent Nigerian review and news sources, used to cross-check facts the bookmaker states.

Each review lists the sources used and the date they were checked, so you can see how fresh the information is.

How often scores are re-checked

Bookmakers change minimum deposits, payment partners and bonus rules often. We re-check a review when the bookmaker announces a change, when a reader reports one and during regular sweeps of every listed site. When an input changes, the score is recalculated with the same formula and the checked date is updated.

What a score does and does not mean

A score describes published terms. It is not a promise about how a bookmaker will treat your account, and it says nothing about whether a bet will win. Two sites with the same score can suit different punters, so read the review for the detail behind the number, and confirm any offer on the bookmaker’s site before you deposit. Remember that betting carries a real cost; our responsible gambling guide covers limits and self-exclusion.

Corrections and commercial relationships

If you spot an outdated licence, deposit limit or bonus rule, send us the details. We verify the report, correct the review and recalculate the score.

Some links on review pages are affiliate links. A bookmaker cannot pay to change an input, a weight or its position: the formula decides the order, and the same formula applies to sites that pay us nothing. Full details are in our affiliate disclosure.

Frequently asked questions

No. Scores come only from the six published criteria and their weights. A commercial deal cannot change an input or the order of the ranking, and the same formula applies to bookmakers that have no agreement with us at all.
