A European handicap adds a whole-goal start to one team and keeps three outcomes: home, handicap draw and away. It is the handicap most Nigerian bookmakers show first, often labelled simply “Handicap” or “3-way handicap”. The picks above give today’s lines; below is how they settle and how we choose them. For the general idea, see our guide to what a handicap means.
Key points
- Lines are whole numbers (−1, −2, +1), so there is never a refund.
- The handicap draw is a separate selection and often pays 3.50 or more.
- Home −1 on a European line equals −1.5 on an Asian line.
- Handicap picks settle automatically from the final score.
How a 3-way handicap settles
Apply the handicap to the final score and read the result as a normal 1X2. With home −1, a 2–0 becomes 1–0 (home), a 1–0 becomes 0–0 (handicap draw) and a 1–1 becomes 0–1 (away).
| Final score | Adjusted score | Winning selection |
|---|---|---|
| 3–0 | 2–0 | Home (−1) |
| 2–1 | 1–1 | Handicap draw |
| 1–1 | 0–1 | Away (+1) |
| 1–2 | 0–2 | Away (+1) |
Most bookmakers settle these markets on 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Labels vary: some sites write “Handicap 0:1”, meaning the away side starts one goal up, others write “Home −1”. Exact rules and labels vary by bookmaker, so check which team the handicap applies to before you stake.
The handicap draw explained
The handicap draw wins when the favourite wins by exactly the size of the handicap: by one goal on −1, by two on −2. It is the selection punters forget, yet single-goal wins are the most common winning margin in football, so a favourite’s −1 handicap draw can be fair value at prices near 3.50 to 4.00.
We only tip the handicap draw when we expect a tight, controlled win, for example a defensive favourite against a team that rarely concedes many.
European vs Asian handicap side by side
| European bet | Asian equivalent | Wins if favourite |
|---|---|---|
| Home −1 | −1.5 | Wins by 2+ |
| Home −2 | −2.5 | Wins by 3+ |
| Away +1 | Away +0.5 | Draws or loses |
| Handicap draw −1 | No direct equivalent | Wins by exactly 1 |
Because the European version has three outcomes, prices on the favourite are usually higher than on the Asian whole-goal line, but you give up the refund. If you would rather keep the refund, our Asian handicap tips cover the half, whole and quarter lines.
When we tip a European handicap
- The favourite’s win price is too short. A home win at 1.25 is poor value; home −1 at around 2.10 rewards a convincing win.
- The underdog defends well. Away +1 covers a draw and a narrow loss, which can price higher than a double chance pick on the same team.
- The margin data supports it. We look at how often each side wins or loses by two or more, expected goals difference, team news and motivation.
- The price beats our estimate. We convert odds into probability and only publish when our number is higher.
Odds and Naira examples
Example You stake ₦1,000 on home −1 at 2.30. The favourite wins 3–1, adjusted to 2–1, so you receive ₦2,300, a profit of ₦1,300. A 2–1 win would be a handicap draw and the bet would lose.
Example You stake ₦1,000 on the −1 handicap draw at 3.80. The favourite wins 1–0, adjusted to 0–0, so you receive ₦3,800. Any other margin loses the stake.
Example You stake ₦2,000 on away +1 at 1.75. The underdog loses 2–1, adjusted to 2–2 with its one-goal start. That is a handicap draw, not an away win, so the bet loses. Only a draw or an away win would pay ₦3,500.
Two-goal lines and away favourites
When a much stronger team plays at home against a weak side, bookmakers also offer −2 and sometimes −3. On −2 the favourite must win by three or more for the home selection, and a two-goal win becomes the handicap draw. These lines pay well, but they need a match where the favourite keeps attacking after going two up, which is less common in competitive leagues.
The handicap does not always go to the home team. An away favourite visiting a struggling host may be −1, and then the home side carries +1. Read the selection carefully: “Home +1” means the host starts a goal up, so it wins if the host wins or draws.
Example You stake ₦1,500 on home −2 at 3.40. The favourite wins 4–1, adjusted to 2–1, so you receive ₦5,100, a profit of ₦3,600. A 3–1 win would be a handicap draw, and the bet would lose.

Common 3-way handicap mistakes
- Treating +1 as “win or draw or lose by one”. That is the Asian +1.5; on a European line a one-goal defeat is a handicap draw.
- Applying the handicap to the wrong team when a site writes the line as 0:1 or 1:0.
- Ignoring the handicap draw price. It shows how likely the bookmaker thinks a one-goal win is.
- Stacking handicaps in accumulators. We keep handicap picks out of our 10 odds slips because a single late goal swings them.
A European handicap on a favourite fails whenever the favourite wins by exactly one goal, which happens often. Factor that into your stake size.

Frequently asked questions
It usually means the away team starts the match one goal up, which is the same as home −1. Read it as home score : away score head start. Labels differ between bookmakers, so check which side receives the goal before you place the bet.
It wins when the adjusted score is level. On a −1 line that means the favourite wins by exactly one goal; on −2 it means exactly two. The handicap draw is its own selection and usually pays well above a normal draw.
No. On European −1 a one-goal win is a handicap draw and your bet on the favourite loses. On Asian −1 the same result refunds your stake. European −1 is closer to Asian −1.5, which also needs a win by two or more.
Because a heavy favourite's win price can be too short to be worth the risk. A −1 or −2 handicap pays more when you expect a big margin. The trade-off is that a narrow win loses, so it suits favourites with a strong attack.
No. European handicaps use whole goals and keep the draw as a third result, so every bet either wins or loses. If you want a possible refund, use an Asian whole-goal line or draw no bet instead.
