An under 4.5 prediction backs a match to finish with four goals or fewer, which covers most results in football. It is priced very short, so the real question is not whether it usually wins but whether a particular game carries a hidden risk of five or more goals. The picks above are chosen with that risk in mind, alongside the occasional over 4.5 pick.
What under 4.5 and over 4.5 pay
Under 4.5 wins on any score up to four goals, including 3–1 and 2–2. Over 4.5 needs at least five, such as 3–2 or 4–1. Our guide to under goal lines covers settlement in full. Typical prices are 1.06 to 1.25 for under 4.5 and 3.50 to 9.00 for over 4.5, depending on how open the fixture looks.
How often five-goal matches happen
Five-goal games are uncommon even in attacking leagues. Even in a high-scoring Premier League season, only around 15% of matches reach five goals, so roughly 85% stay under 4.5. Many leagues score less than that, and the share of five-goal games falls with them.
That still means about one game in six or seven in a high-scoring league breaks the line. If you back under 4.5 every weekend without filtering, you will lose regularly, and each loss is large compared with the small profit from each win.
The risk inside very short odds
At 1.12, under 4.5 implies about an 89% chance. You need to win roughly nine bets in ten just to break even. Here is how that looks in Naira.
Example You stake ₦10,000 on under 4.5 at 1.15. A win returns ₦11,500, a profit of ₦1,500. A single loss costs the full ₦10,000, which wipes out almost seven winning bets of the same size.
Very short odds feel safe because they win often, but the loss size is what hurts. Keep under 4.5 stakes the same as any other bet instead of raising them because the price is low.
When under 4.5 is worth posting
We filter out fixtures where five goals are realistic and only post under 4.5 when our chance is clearly above the bookmaker’s. The data we use for this line:
- Share of 5+ goal games for each team over the last 20 matches, not just averages.
- Heavy defeats conceded: a side that has lost 4–1 or 5–0 several times is a warning sign.
- xG against above 2.0 per game for either team, which signals a defence that can collapse.
- Motivation and rotation, such as a dead rubber where a weakened side faces a full-strength attack.
- Red-card risk in heated fixtures, since an early dismissal can turn a 1–0 into a 5–1.
Low-scoring leagues, evenly matched sides and two defensive managers make the strongest under 4.5 cases.
Where five-goal games usually come from
Most five-goal matches follow one of a few patterns. The first is a one-sided rout, where a strong team keeps scoring against a side that has stopped resisting, such as 4–1 or 5–0. The second is an end-to-end game between two weak defences, producing results like 3–2 or 3–3. The third is a match changed by an early red card or a goalkeeping error that forces the trailing team to throw players forward.
Each pattern leaves traces in the data. Routs show up in a team’s recent heavy defeats and in how many players it is missing. Open games show up in high xG against for both sides. Before posting under 4.5, we make sure none of these patterns is likely in the fixture.
Over 4.5: when a big price is worth a small stake
Over 4.5 is a high-odds bet that we post rarely. It suits fixtures with a huge gap in quality, such as early cup rounds between top-flight and lower-league teams, or two attacking sides with weak defences who both need to win.
Example Over 4.5 at 5.50 with ₦500 returns ₦2,750, a profit of ₦2,250. At that price you need to win just over 18% of such bets to break even, so long losing runs are normal.
If you want big odds from a single match without needing five goals, a European handicap on a strong favourite can be an alternative, and our big odds page lists higher-priced slips.
Under 4.5 in slips and rollovers
Many punters use under 4.5 to lift a slip’s total odds slightly. Five legs at 1.15 multiply to about 2.01, similar to one pick on a 2 odds slip. But if each leg has a 90% chance, all five win only about 59% of the time. One solid pick at 2.00 is often a cleaner bet than five very short ones.
Enter every leg into the accumulator calculator to see the real total before you place a slip. If under 4.5 pays too little for your slip, our over and under 3.5 picks give up one goal of cushion for a better price.
Common under 4.5 mistakes
- Adding under 4.5 to every slip without checking which teams concede heavily.
- Backing under 4.5 in mismatches where the favourite regularly wins by four or more.
- Ignoring red cards and late tactical changes when watching a live game.
How to read our 4.5 picks and results above
Under 4.5 picks usually carry high confidence ratings because they win often, but always read the rating with the price: a 5 at 1.08 adds very little to your return. Over 4.5 picks carry low ratings and high odds. The results table shows each final score, so you can see how many under picks lost to five-goal games and how close the over picks came.
A short list of under 4.5 picks on a busy matchday is deliberate. Skipping a match is part of the method: when we cannot rule out a rout or an end-to-end game, we prefer to post nothing on this line rather than add one more short price to the list.

Frequently asked questions
It wins more often than lower under lines, but no line is safe. In attacking leagues around one match in six or seven reaches five goals. The very short price also means each loss costs far more than each win pays, so filtering fixtures matters more than the line itself.
Under 3.5 loses on four goals, while under 4.5 still wins on 3–1 or 2–2. That extra goal of cushion makes under 4.5 win more often, but it pays lower odds. Our 3.5 goal picks show the trade-off.
Big mismatches, such as cup ties between top-flight and lower-league teams, and games between two sides that both attack and defend poorly. Matches where both teams need to win late in a season also tend to open up.
Keep it small and fixed. At odds around 5.00 to 6.00, losing runs of eight or ten bets are normal. A level stake means one winner can cover several losers without any single loss damaging your bankroll.
It can. An early dismissal often lets the stronger team score freely against ten men, which raises the chance of five goals. If you are betting in-play, check the line again after a red card rather than holding the same view.
