An HT/FT prediction asks you to call two results at once: who leads at half time and who wins at full time. Get both right and the odds are much higher than a straight win; get either wrong and the bet loses. Each pick above names the combination we expect, the price and our confidence. Below you will find the nine outcomes with typical prices, the timing data we use and why level-at-the-break picks appear so often.
How an HT/FT pick is settled
The first symbol is the result at half time, the second the result after 90 minutes plus stoppage time. “X/1” means level at the break and a home win at the end. For a full walk-through of the market and its labels, see our HT/FT guide.
The nine HT/FT outcomes and typical odds
The prices below are illustrative for a match where the home side is about 1.60 to win. Real odds move with every fixture, but the order rarely changes.
| Outcome | Typical odds | Implied chance |
|---|---|---|
| 1/1 | 2.40 | 41.7% |
| X/1 | 4.50 | 22.2% |
| X/X | 5.50 | 18.2% |
| 2/2 | 11.00 | 9.1% |
| X/2 | 12.00 | 8.3% |
| 1/X | 15.00 | 6.7% |
| 2/X | 21.00 | 4.8% |
| 2/1 | 26.00 | 3.8% |
| 1/2 | 34.00 | 2.9% |
The implied chances add up to more than 100% because of the bookmaker’s margin, which is wider in this nine-way market than in 1X2.
Why X/1 and X/X are such common picks
A large share of first halves end level. Long-run half-time records commonly show close to four in ten matches all square at the break, partly because more goals are scored in the second half, when legs tire and trailing teams take risks. That makes “X” at half time the most likely single half-time result in many fixtures.
- X/1 suits a favourite that starts slowly and wears opponents down, often one with a strong bench. At the prices above it pays 4.50 against 1.60 for the straight win.
- X/X suits two cautious, evenly matched sides in a low-scoring game. It overlaps with our draw picks but at a bigger price.
- 1/1 is the most likely outcome when a strong home side regularly scores early.
The same logic works for visitors. X/2 fits a strong away team that tends to be held early by an energetic host and then pulls clear after the hour, while 2/2 only makes sense when the away side is clearly better and scores early on its travels. Away picks in this market carry longer prices because home teams start more matches on the front foot.
Turnarounds such as 2/1 and 1/2 are rare, which is why they pay 25.00 or more. We almost never tip them.
The timing data behind each pick
- First-half goals. How often each team scores and concedes before the 45th minute, at the relevant venue.
- Half-time leads and draws. How often each side leads, trails or is level at the break over the last 10 to 15 matches.
- Late goals. The share of a team’s goals scored after the 60th minute, a key sign for X/1 or X/2.
- Lead protection. How often a team that leads at half time goes on to win, which decides between 1/1 and safer options.
- Bench strength and fitness. Teams with impact substitutes tend to finish matches stronger.
Example A home favourite is 1.60 to win, 2.40 for 1/1 and 4.50 for X/1. You stake ₦1,000 on X/1. If it is 0-0 at half time and finishes 2-0, you collect ₦4,500 (₦3,500 profit). If the hosts score in the 30th minute and win 2-0, the result is 1/1 and your X/1 bet loses even though your team won.
That example is the heart of HT/FT: you are betting on how a match unfolds, not only on its result. If you cannot form a view on the first 45 minutes, the straight win at 1.60 is the more sensible bet, and the extra price on X/1 is simply payment for a guess.
Matches where we skip HT/FT
Not every fixture deserves an HT/FT pick, and leaving one out is part of the method. We usually skip:
- Derbies and cup finals. Early bookings, nerves and long stoppages make the first half hard to read.
- Opening rounds of a season. First-half and late-goal data from a handful of matches is too thin to trust.
- Teams with a new coach. Pressing, substitution habits and game plans change, so old timing data stops being useful.
- Heavy rain or poor pitches. These slow the game and push more matches towards X at half time in ways the numbers do not capture.
On a quiet day you may see only two or three HT/FT selections above. That is deliberate: fewer, better-supported picks suit a market where every bet already needs two separate calls to come true.
Common HT/FT mistakes
- Picking 1/1 by reflex. A favourite that rarely leads at half time is a poor 1/1 pick, however often it wins.
- Chasing big turnaround prices. 2/1 at 26.00 looks tempting, but its true chance is tiny.
- Adding HT/FT legs to long slips. One HT/FT pick at 4.50 already carries about as much risk as a treble of 1.60 favourites, before any other leg is added.
- Ignoring early red cards and penalties. These swing first halves; you cannot predict them, so stake modestly.
How HT/FT tips fit with other bets
HT/FT works best as a single or a small double. If you like the full-time winner but are unsure about the half-time state, take the straight win from our 1X2 tips instead. For an exact score with a similar risk level, compare correct score picks. If you watch matches live, waiting until half time and backing the second-half result through in-play betting lets you see the first half before committing.
How to read the HT/FT picks and results above
Filter by “HT/FT” to see these picks on their own. Each row shows the combination (for example X/1), the odds when published, kick-off in WAT and a confidence score from 1 to 5. Because these prices are high, a confidence of 3 is a strong HT/FT call. The results table lists every pick with the half-time and full-time score, so you can see whether misses came from the first or second half. The full predictions page covers every match on the day.

Frequently asked questions
When one team is a clear favourite, the most common outcome is that team leading at half time and winning (1/1 or 2/2). In evenly matched games X/X is often the most likely. Level half times are common overall, so X/1 and X/2 also land regularly.
Unless you picked that exact turnaround, the bet loses. If the home side trails 0-1 at half time and wins 2-1, only 2/1 wins. A 1/1 or X/1 pick loses even though the team you backed won, because the half-time part was wrong.
Usually not. Each HT/FT leg already has a low chance of landing, and multiplying several makes a slip very unlikely to win. Two legs at 4.50 combine to 20.25 but hit only rarely. Use HT/FT as a single, or see our accumulator tips for better-suited legs.
No. The full-time part is settled after 90 minutes plus stoppage time, so extra time and penalties are ignored. A cup tie that is 0-0 at half time and 1-1 at 90 minutes is X/X, even if one team wins in extra time.
