Each double chance prediction above covers two of the three full-time results, so the pick still wins if the second-most-likely outcome happens. You get lower odds in return, typically 1.15 to 1.60. This page shows when each of the three options earns its place, how to work out whether the price is fair and how to use these short-priced picks without letting them drain your balance.
The three double chance options at a glance
Double chance combines two of the 1X2 outcomes into one bet. If you want the full background, read our double chance guide; for picking, this table is all you need.
| Pick | Wins if | Loses if |
|---|---|---|
| 1X | Home win or draw | Away win |
| X2 | Away win or draw | Home win |
| 12 | Either team wins | Draw |
When to use each option
1X: the stronger host who may be held
1X suits a home side that rarely loses at home but draws more than it should, often a well-organised team that struggles to break down deep defences.
X2: the away side you trust not to lose
X2 fits an away favourite in a tricky fixture, or a well-drilled underdog facing a host in poor form. It is also our usual pick when the home side’s results flatter its underlying numbers.
12: open games without a draw
Choose 12 when both teams need a win, both attack and defend poorly, or the draw rate for both is low. It pays more than most 1X or X2 picks because draws are the least common single result.
The pair you choose should follow the result you fear most. If the danger is a stalemate, 12 removes it; if the danger is the underdog nicking a goal, 1X or X2 covers the draw but not the defeat. When we cannot name the outcome we are most worried about, we leave the match out of the double chance list rather than force a pick.
What we check before each double chance tip
- Loss rate, not win rate. For 1X or X2 the question is how often the team loses. A side with 4 wins, 5 draws and 1 defeat in its last 10 is a stronger X2 candidate than one with 6 wins and 4 defeats.
- Draw rate. For 12, we want both teams drawing in under about 20% of recent matches.
- Expected goals difference. It shows whether an unbeaten run is backed by performance.
- Team news and motivation. A missing defensive leader matters more here than a missing winger.
Fair double chance odds and implied probability
You can estimate a fair double chance price from the 1X2 odds: add the two implied chances and divide 1 by the total. With a home price of 2.10 and a draw at 3.40, 1X implies 47.6% + 29.4% = 77.0%, so the fair price is about 1.30. If the bookmaker offers 1.22, you are paying a big margin. Use the odds calculator to convert prices quickly, and see reading odds and implied probability for the method.
Example An away side is on X2 at 1.45 (69.0% implied). Our data rates them unbeaten about 75% of the time. A ₦5,000 stake returns ₦7,250 if they win or draw (₦2,250 profit). If the hosts win, you lose ₦5,000, more than the profit from two winning X2 bets at this price.
Match types where double chance works best
Some fixtures suit double chance more than others, and knowing them helps you read the picks above.
- Derbies and rivalry games. Form counts for less and draws are common, so a 1X or X2 on the better side often beats the straight win on value.
- Away favourites in tough grounds. A top side visiting a host with a strong home record is a natural X2 spot, priced around 1.25 to 1.40.
- Relegation battles. A bottom-three host that has stopped losing at home but cannot win can make 1X a sensible pick at 1.50 or more.
- Two attacking sides with poor defences. This is the classic 12 match, especially when neither team has drawn much and both need points.
We avoid double chance in matches where the favourite is already under 1.30, because the 1X or X2 price falls close to 1.05 to 1.10 and the reward no longer justifies the stake. In those games a handicap or a goals market on our betting tips hub usually offers a fairer return.
Double chance mistakes that cost money
- Long chains of 1X picks. Ten legs at 1.20 multiply to 6.19, which looks attractive. If each leg has an 85% chance, all ten land only about 20% of the time.
- Taking any price. Double chance under 1.15 rarely gives value; the margin eats most of the return.
- Picking the wrong pair. A 1X on a host that loses often but rarely draws is better replaced by a straight home win or a handicap.
- Ignoring the alternative. When you would be happy with your stake back on a draw, draw no bet picks pay more than 1X or X2.
Using double chance picks on your slip
Double chance legs are popular in short slips because they lift the hit rate. Two or three at 1.30 to 1.50 can build a total near 2.00, the target for our daily 2 odds slip. Beyond four legs, the multiplied risk usually outweighs the safety of each pick. If you want bigger multiples, start from our accumulator tips and check the return with the acca calculator.
How to read today’s double chance tips above
Set the market filter to “Double chance”. Each row shows which pair we picked (1X, X2 or 12), the odds when published, the kick-off in WAT and a confidence score from 1 to 5. Because these picks win often, judge them on ROI rather than hit rate: a run of 15 winners at 1.25 followed by four losers leaves you behind. The results table lists every pick with its score so you can see that balance for yourself.

Frequently asked questions
Neither is safer by default. 1X is safer when the home side is the stronger team, and X2 when the away side is. The price tells you which the bookmaker rates higher: the lower the double chance odds, the more likely that pair is expected to land.
No. Like the 1X2 market it is settled on the score after 90 minutes plus stoppage time. In a cup tie that ends 1-1 and goes to penalties, a 1X or X2 pick wins and a 12 pick loses, whatever happens in extra time.
Pick 12 when you are confident the match will not be drawn but cannot separate the teams. It covers both wins at a price usually between 1.25 and 1.45. If you have a clear favourite, the straight win on our 1X2 tips page pays more.
Two to four is a sensible range. Each extra leg multiplies risk, and short prices hide that. Four legs each 80% likely all land only about 41% of the time. Keep the slip short and treat each leg as a separate judgement, not filler to raise the odds.
