In short
- The league has been called the Nigeria Premier Football League since 2023; 20 clubs play 38 matchdays from late August to May.
- Most games kick off at 4:00pm WAT on Saturday or Sunday.
- In 2023/24, league figures after 330 matches showed 226 home wins, 79 draws and only 25 away wins.
- The 2025/26 season averaged about two goals a game, well below Europe’s big leagues.
The NPFL format: clubs, season and name
The league was known as the Nigeria Professional Football League from 2014 until the NFF approved the change to Nigeria Premier Football League in September 2023. The NPFL initials stayed the same, which is why bookmakers and fixture lists still show both names.
Twenty clubs play each other home and away for 38 matchdays and 380 matches. The 2026/27 calendar starts at the end of August, breaks from 23 December to 6 January and is planned to finish on 30 May 2027. Clubs at the top chase places in CAF’s continental competitions, and in 2025/26 four clubs were relegated to the Nigeria National League. Check the current season’s rules before betting on relegation markets, because the league can adjust them.
NPFL kick-off times and match days
The standard kick-off is 4:00pm WAT, mostly on Sunday, with a handful of matches on Saturday. There is no time-zone conversion to worry about, but there are two scheduling habits to know.
- Postponements for CAF games. Clubs playing in the CAF Champions League or Confederation Cup often have league fixtures moved, so a matchday can be missing three or four games.
- Rescheduled midweek games. Postponed fixtures are often slotted into midweek dates, which can leave a club playing twice in a few days, sometimes with long trips in between.
Home advantage: the key to any NPFL prediction
No other factor moves our numbers as much. Statistics released by the league’s competitions unit for 2023/24, after 330 matches, showed:
| Outcome | Matches | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Home win | 226 | 68% |
| Draw | 79 | 24% |
| Away win | 25 | 8% |
Home sides scored 512 goals in those games and away sides 196. The pattern held in 2025/26: after Matchday 36, reported figures showed 226 home wins, 91 draws and 42 away wins, an away-win rate of about 12%. Away results are improving slightly, but the home side still wins most matches.
What this means for you: home sides start with a far bigger edge than in England, but bookmakers know the pattern too, so short home prices are not automatically value. Value usually turns up in two places: the away side’s double chance (X2) in the rare games where the visitors are clearly stronger, and a strong home side whose odds are longer than its home record justifies.
Why away teams struggle: travel, pitches and weather
Long road journeys
Nigeria is a big country, and many away trips are made by road. A club travelling from the South-West to the far North can cover around 1,000 km and arrive tired, sometimes the day before the game. Check where the away side played last and how far it has come; a long journey after a midweek fixture is a strong reason to avoid the visitors.
Pitches that suit the home side
Surfaces vary from good grass to worn pitches and artificial turf. Home players train on them every week, while visitors have to adapt within 90 minutes, which tends to suppress passing teams and lower scoring.
Rain, heat and harmattan
The rainy season, roughly April to October in the south, can leave pitches heavy or waterlogged, which favours under markets. A 4pm kick-off in the north during the hot, dry months is hard on visiting sides used to the coast, and harmattan haze from around December to February affects visibility and long passing.
Goals in the NPFL: why unders and NG get attention
The 2025/26 season produced 769 goals in 380 matches, about 2.02 per game, compared with close to three per game in the Bundesliga. With home sides scoring most of the goals, the scoreline 1-0 to the home team appears often. That supports under 2.5, home win to nil and NG (at least one side fails to score) as regular angles, though every one still needs a match-specific reason. Our under 2.5 picks and clean sheet picks include NPFL games when the numbers fit, and the guide to under goals markets explains each line.
Example A strong home side is 1.55 to win and 2.40 to win to nil. Stake ₦2,000 on the home win and you get ₦3,100 back (₦1,100 profit). The same stake on win to nil returns ₦4,800 (₦2,800 profit), but loses if the visitors score even once. Take it only when the away side’s attack has been poor on its travels.
How to find NPFL odds on Nigerian bookmakers
- Go to Football, then Nigeria. The league is usually listed as Premier League or NPFL under the Nigeria country heading, not on the main football page.
- Check closer to kick-off. NPFL markets often open later than European ones and can be pulled when a game is postponed.
- Expect fewer markets. 1X2, double chance, goals lines and GG/NG are common; corners and player markets are rare.
- Compare more than one site. Prices on local football differ more between bookmakers than on big European games. Our Nigerian betting sites ranking lists licensed options.
- Read the postponement rule. Most bookmakers void a bet if the match is not played within a set time; check your site’s rules before a matchday with CAF clashes.
What we check before each pick
Before any NPFL pick goes up, we look at each side’s home and away record separately, the away team’s journey and recent schedule, weather at the venue, pitch type, any unpaid-wages or administrative news, and whether the club has a CAF fixture coming. Then we compare our probability with the price.
Following NPFL picks on matchdays
The top picks show NPFL games first when a matchday is on, and the Weekend tab holds the full round. The results table above records every pick for the last 30 days. For other leagues, the predictions hub lists everything, and the AFCON predictions cover the national team when tournaments and qualifiers come round.

Frequently asked questions
Nigeria Premier Football League. The NFF approved the name in September 2023, replacing Nigeria Professional Football League, which had been used since 2014. The initials did not change, so bookmakers and fixture lists may show either name for the same competition.
Rarely. Official figures for 2023/24 after 330 matches showed just 25 away wins, about 8%, against 226 home wins. In 2025/26 the away-win share was closer to 12% after Matchday 36. Back the visitors only when there is a clear, specific reason.
Most matches kick off at 4:00pm WAT, usually on Sunday with a few on Saturday. Postponed games, often caused by CAF club fixtures, are moved to midweek dates, so check each pick above for the exact day and time.
Look under Football, then the Nigeria country section, rather than the featured leagues. Markets may open only a day or two before kick-off and disappear if a match is postponed. Not every bookmaker covers every game, so compare a few of the licensed sites.
Yes, by European standards. The 2025/26 season averaged about two goals a game, and home teams score most of them. That makes under 2.5 and home clean sheets common outcomes, but heavy pitches, attacking home sides and weak defences can still produce goals, so check each match.
Most Nigerian bookmakers void the bet and return your stake if the match is not played within the period set in their rules. In an accumulator the void leg is usually treated as odds of 1.00. Rules differ, so read your bookmaker's terms.
