Interwetten Review Nigeria: Licence Status Checked

Our Interwetten review looks at the Austrian bookmaker's Nigerian venture: its 2020 NLRC licence, why that licence no longer helps most punters, and what we could not verify.

Interwetten is a well-known name in German-speaking Europe, and it chose Nigeria as its first African market in 2020. This Interwetten review explains what that launch involved, why its licence position is now unclear and why we cannot recommend it over bookmakers with confirmed state licences.

An Austrian bookmaker with an expired Nigerian permit

Interwetten was founded in Vienna in September 1990 and now runs its business from Malta, where Interwetten Gaming Ltd holds licences for sports betting and casino games. It has also held licences in Spain and in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. Before entering Nigeria it reported about 1.8 million customers.

In March 2020 the company announced an NLRC licence and a Nigerian site at interwetten.ng, with sports betting, virtual sports and esports on mobile and desktop. The NLRC’s list of approved operators shows Interwetten Nigeria Limited with a five-year sports betting licence from 7 May 2020 to 6 May 2025, and no renewal row.

Two further points matter. Since the Supreme Court judgment of 22 November 2024, an NLRC licence only covers the Federal Capital Territory, with states licensing betting within their own borders. And Interwetten does not appear on the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority register of licensed operators.

We could not confirm a current Nigerian licence for Interwetten. Without one, there is no state regulator to take a complaint if a withdrawal stalls. Read our guide to betting law in Nigeria before using any site in this position.

Bonuses: nothing we could verify

Some listings still quote a 100% first-deposit bonus for Interwetten Nigeria, but we could not trace any of these figures to a dated Interwetten page. We have therefore left the bonus fields as not published. If you see an offer, look for three things before opting in: the wagering multiple, the minimum odds per selection and the deadline. Our rollover explainer shows how to turn those into a realistic estimate of what a bonus is worth.

How to test any offer: a ₦10,000 bonus with 10x wagering at minimum odds of 3.00 means ₦100,000 of stakes on long-priced bets. If you would not normally stake that much, the bonus is unlikely to become withdrawable cash.

Opening an account, if the site is trading

We could not load the Nigerian registration page, so the steps below are the checks we recommend rather than a confirmed walkthrough.

  1. Open interwetten.ng directly in your browser rather than through a shared link.
  2. Before registering, scroll to the footer and note the licence and regulator stated there.
  3. Register with your legal name, date of birth and Nigerian phone number.
  4. Confirm any SMS or email code, then read the payment terms before your first deposit.
  5. Expect to provide ID and proof of address before a withdrawal.

Sports and features at launch

At its 2020 launch, Interwetten said the Nigerian site would be adapted to local tastes, with football at the centre and virtual sports and esports alongside. Its European sites are known for live betting, but we could not confirm the current live, cash out, casino or Aviator offer on interwetten.ng, so these features are marked as not published on this page.

To mark the launch, former Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni became brand ambassador in 2020, with a weekly Yakubu Tip column on social media and the site.

Payments, limits and payouts

Interwetten has not published Naira deposit and withdrawal methods, minimums or payout times that we could access. Older third-party figures, such as a ₦100 minimum, could not be confirmed. If you already hold a balance, withdraw to a bank account in your own name and keep records of every transaction.

Before funding any account whose licence you cannot confirm, run a small test. Deposit the smallest amount the cashier allows, place one low-stake bet, then request a withdrawal straight away. Note how long the money takes to land, whether extra documents are requested and whether any fee is deducted. If that first withdrawal stalls for days or support stops replying, do not add more money. Screenshots of each step will help if you later need to report the site to a regulator or your bank.

Support channels

No current Nigerian support contacts could be verified. Use the contact details shown inside your account, and ask for any important answer, such as limits or bonus terms, in writing.

Better options for most Nigerian punters

Interwetten’s European heritage is real, but a long history abroad does not replace a current local licence. Until the operator publishes one, choose a bookmaker on a state register, such as BetKing or Betano, or browse our licensed betting sites.

6.0/10

Our verdict on Interwetten

Interwetten has a long European record, dating from 1990 in Vienna, and entered Nigeria in 2020 with an NLRC licence and Yakubu Aiyegbeni as ambassador. Today, though, its NLRC licence on record ended in May 2025, it is not on the Lagos register, and we could not confirm current bonuses, payment methods or limits on interwetten.ng. Until it publishes a current Nigerian licence and clear Naira banking terms, most punters should use a bookmaker with a confirmed state licence instead.

Interwetten FAQ

The NLRC list shows a sports betting licence for Interwetten Nigeria Limited from 7 May 2020 to 6 May 2025, with no renewal listed. It is not on the Lagos State register. NLRC licences now cover only the FCT, so we could not confirm a current licence for most Nigerian punters.
