  10. Should Nigerians bet with Stake?

For most Nigerian readers Stake is not a safe choice in 2026, whatever the quality of its sportsbook. This Stake review starts with the regulatory action taken against it in September 2026, then covers the betting product, crypto payments and app for readers who want the full picture.

Who owns Stake and why Nigerian regulators acted against it

Stake.com belongs to Medium Rare N.V., a company registered in Willemstad, Curaçao, and has been running since 2017. It holds Curaçao Gaming Authority licence OGL/2024/1451/0918 for sports and casino. Abroad it is known for sponsoring Everton, the UFC and the Stake F1 Team.

In September 2026 the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority declared Stake.com an illegal operator, and the Federation of State Gaming Regulators of Nigeria extended the action to its 24 member states. According to the notice, Stake holds no licence from Lagos or any member state and ignored at least ten compliance notices over two years about registering and paying monthly gaming taxes. Trade press adds that an earlier Oyo State licence lapsed after it was not renewed. The regulators relied on the Supreme Court judgment of 22 November 2024, which made gaming a matter for the states.

If a state regulator has declared an operator illegal, no Nigerian authority will take up your complaint about a frozen balance or closed account. The notice also asks banks, payment firms and advertisers to stop working with Stake, so naira payment options can vanish overnight.

Our explainer on whether betting is legal in Nigeria shows how to check which licence applies where you live.

Stake bonuses: referral codes, races and raffles

Stake does not run the familiar Nigerian voucher-style welcome offer. Instead, affiliate referral codes advertise a 200% match on the first deposit, capped at $3,000. The code must be typed in at sign-up because it cannot be added later, and the bonus is credited only after email and identity checks. Reviewers quote different wagering levels (35x and 40x), so read the terms attached to the specific code.

Worked example: one review applies 40x wagering to the bonus amount. A $50 deposit would bring a $100 bonus, which then needs $4,000 of bets before it can be withdrawn. That is 80 times the original deposit, far more than a casual punter would normally stake in a month.

The regular promotions are global rather than Nigerian: a daily race sharing $100,000 among the top 5,000 players, a weekly raffle worth $75,000 with one ticket per $1,000 wagered on sports, and insurance offers such as Shield on accumulators and bad-beat refunds on selected leagues. Compare them with locally licensed offers on our bonuses page.

Signing up and passing Stake’s identity checks

  1. Open the official Stake site or iOS app and choose Register.
  2. Complete the sign-up form and, if you are using one, add the referral code now.
  3. Confirm your email address from the link Stake sends.
  4. Upload a government ID such as a passport or driver’s licence, front and back, for identity verification.
  5. Fund the account with crypto or a naira option shown in the wallet.

One reviewer reports approval in about three hours. Bonus credit and withdrawals both depend on these checks, so finish them before you deposit anything significant.

Sports coverage and odds

The iOS app listing counts 39 sports, 14 esports and three racing categories. Football leads, with results, totals and corners markets across the main European leagues, and coverage reaches smaller competitions such as Mali’s top division. MMA is a strength thanks to the UFC partnership, and basketball, tennis and American football are covered in depth.

Reviewers rate Stake’s football prices as competitive, but it does not run the boosted odds on big matches that several Nigerian brands push. Check whether the NPFL fixtures you follow are listed before depositing.

Live betting, streams and cash out

In-play betting covers most top fixtures. Stake streams selected events in HD, and one review notes that streams play even before you fund the account. Cash out is offered on many markets, which helps when you want to settle a long accumulator early. Our live betting guide explains when settling early makes sense.

Casino and Stake Originals

The casino is one of the largest online: the iOS listing mentions more than 4,000 slots and over 120 live tables. Stake also has its own Originals such as Plinko, Limbo and Keno, plus crash-style games. We could not confirm whether Spribe’s Aviator is open to Nigerian accounts, so it shows as not published in the features grid.

Stake on iPhone, Android and mobile

iPhone users can install Stake from the App Store; the listing needs iOS 13 or later and is rated 18+. There is no Android app on Google Play, and Stake’s support told Afrik-Foot in September 2026 that no Android app exists, so there is no official APK either. On Android you add the mobile site to your home screen as a web app, which works well but sends no push notifications. Treat any download labelled “Stake APK” as fake. Our betting apps page lists licensed apps for Android.

Crypto and naira payments

Crypto is Stake’s main payment rail: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Dogecoin, USDT and other coins, with no fixed minimum and transfers usually completed in under 10 minutes. Reviewers also report naira deposits from about ₦1,000 via OPay and bank transfer, with the balance displayed in naira. Those local routes depend on third-party payment firms, which the September 2026 notice told to stop serving unlicensed operators.

Coin prices move, so a win held in Bitcoin can be worth fewer naira by the time you sell it, and network fees vary by coin. If crypto betting is your main interest, our crypto betting sites page explains the trade-offs.

Contacting Stake support

Stake offers 24/7 live chat, email and a help centre. Reviewers report quick chat replies but slower handling of complex account cases. Because Stake has no Nigerian licence, any dispute ends with the company itself or a complaint to its Curaçao regulator, which is a long way from a Lagos punter.

Should Nigerians bet with Stake?

Stake may still appeal to experienced crypto users who understand offshore risk and keep balances small. For everyone else the regulatory action is decisive: pick a bookmaker licensed in your state, with naira payouts and a local regulator behind it. Our Bet9ja review and BetKing review cover two Lagos-licensed options.

7.2/10

Our verdict on Stake

Stake has a deep sportsbook, quick crypto payments, HD streams on selected events and one of the largest online casinos. For Nigerians, though, the September 2026 action by the Lagos regulator and 24 other states settles the question: it holds no Nigerian licence, so there is no local body to help if a withdrawal is held. Experienced crypto users who accept that risk may still use it. Most readers should choose a bookmaker licensed in their own state.

Stake FAQ

Not in most of the country. In September 2026 the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority declared Stake.com an illegal operator, and the Federation of State Gaming Regulators of Nigeria applied the same position in its 24 member states. Stake holds a Curaçao licence but no Nigerian state licence.
